#EarperView with @DBenitez95

Today’s final EarperView is with Diana Benitez, graphic designer for EH Con Canada and who is also featured in artists’ alley.

Tell us a little bit about your non-Earper alter ego.

Not much to tell, but I spend most of my time either drawing, watching TV, or playing video games. I do also attend a church regularly, and work at a coffee shop. I have a dog named Boe, and a lot of family that I see very often.

How did you find Wynonna Earp and the fandom?

I found Wynonna Earp after reading a preview of the comic that was included with one of my copies of Orphan Black Helsinki. I had forgotten about it for a while, but saw a gifset of Nicole Haught on tumblr and decided to officially check out the show! I later became involved in the fandom mostly through Twitter and Instagram after posting my first WayHaught fanart.

Is this your first fandom?

Nope! I was heavily involved in The 100 fandom — mostly just for Clexa — and I was also very involved in the SuperCorp fandom for a while. There’s a lot of fandoms I’ve been a part of, but Clexa and Wynonna Earp have been my favorites.

What is your favorite fandom memory?

Probably the 100 horse sized ducks vs. 100 duck sized horses discussion. Though I may be biased since it happened at EHCon.

What is your favorite con memory?

Personally, my favorite con memory was at EHCon 2018 when I finally got to meet Tim Rozon. It was very surreal, and it was a childhood dream come true. I also really enjoyed being able to moderate and organize the Fans of Colour panel, which Varun and Chantel were a part of.

What is your favorite Wynonna Earp/Earper activity?

I like the cons. Although I’ve only been to one, it’s such an amazing feeling being in a place where everyone shares the same interests. I also enjoy the Earp it Forward initiative; I think it’s a great way to show that fandom can be so much more than just people watching a show.

What has Wynonna Earp come to mean to you?

To me, Wynonna Earp means growth and understanding. It’s amazing how well the fandom — or at least most of the fandom — has learned to listen and take to heart the concerns of others. It’s not often that a fandom is able to have differing opinions on a topic, and still have a civil and safe discussion about it. This fandom is special in ways that I can’t explain.

Are there any pictures you’d like to share of your Wynonna Earp experience?

One of my favorite moments: meeting Tim, and being photo-bombed by Melanie (who hung around my table afterwards and chatted with me about my art)

2018-08-11 21.47.46.jpg

Sweet potato or Yukon Gold potato?

Sweet potato.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you Fandras?

I would say 10.

Describe why Fandras is a thing in 7 words or less.

Everything Emily makes is gold.

What is your favorite Earp sisters moment?

Season one finale when Wynonna was immediately willing to trade Peacemaker for Nicole’s life once she realized Waverly loved her.

How have you Earped your life?

Everything I do is Earp. I’ve gotten my siblings to watch the show, have brought them to every Earp event I can, and have even been able to bring my brother to meet Varun, whom he adores.

What’s the Earpiest thing you’ve ever done?

I went to a Blue Jays game with 150-ish other earpers (one of whom was Andrea Higgins).

Who of the regular characters on Wynonna Earp do you think is the best artist?

I don’t know if she counts as regular, but I think Rosita is secretly an art connoisseur.

Many thanks to Diana and all of the lovely people affiliated with EH Con Canada who agreed to participate in EarperViews this week. Special thanks to Bonnie for helping me put this together. If you want more info about EH Con Canada, head over to their website to check it out!

#EarperView with @zum_hingst

Happy Thursday, Earpers! Today’s EarperView is with Patricia, one of the artists featured in the EH Con Canada artists’ alley.

Tell us a little bit about your non-Earper alter ego.

When I’m not Earping I run a machine shop that makes high precision parts for the aerospace, medical and printing industries.  I’m a big sci-fi/fantasy fan.  I love reading sci-fi novels including books by William Gibson and Tad Williams. I enjoy team sports and I have played competitively as an ice hockey goalie. I’m into sports cars and enjoy building and racing them.

How did you find Wynonna Earp and the fandom?

I was cruising the internet and came across a Wayhaught clip/GIF, (the Nedley’s office/first kiss scene).  I thought “oooh this is interesting” so I started watching Wynonna Earp and was immediately hooked.

Is this your first fandom?

I’m totally into sci-fi/supernatural shows, but there are only a select few that I’m really passionate about and probably will be for life. I’ve been to multiple Star Wars and Star Trek cons, meeting the actors and fans.   I’m also a huge fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and now Wynonna Earp.

What is your favorite fandom memory?

Clexacon in 2017 was my favorite fandom memory.  It was the first time I met other Earpers. My flight to Vegas was delayed by 7 hours so I missed the Earper meetup, and I barely made it to the Wayhaught panel. which was amazing.   I met Bonnie and Kevin, who I recognized from the podcast, and also got to know some Earpers from my hometown, Vancouver. There was a WayHaught duo autograph session and the line-up was less than 10 minutes’ wait time!! Imagine that! Hahaha

It was a great introduction into how awesome the Earper fandom can be!

What is your favorite con memory?

There are so many great memories from the cons I’ve been to, but the best memory was the episode watch with the cast and writers at EhCon 2018.

What is your favorite Wynonna Earp/Earper activity?

Watching and re-watching Wynonna Earp, of course!  I enjoy meeting up with the local Earper fan group and reading WE fanfiction.

What has Wynonna Earp come to mean to you?

Wynnona Earp has been my muse!  It’s a creative experience where I get to do my everyday work but create something that means a lot to me personally.  I love designing an object I think is cool and is meaningful to me – and then sharing it with other Earpers and the cast. It’s a dream.

Are there any pictures you’d like to share of your Wynonna Earp experience?

A pic of Kim and I with the cast of Wynonna Earp at EhCon2018.

Sweet potato or Yukon Gold potato?

Yukon Gold!

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you Fandras?

I think I’m a solid 9.

Describe why Fandras is a thing in 7 words or less.

Wynonna Earp is your job now.”

What is your favorite Earp sisters moment?

In the first season, the conversation they have when they are drinking the bubble gum sake.

How have you Earped your life?

I dress Earper. Think Earper. Talk Earper. Chat with Earpers and Fight for Wynnona.

What’s the Earpiest thing you’ve ever done?

Put on my plaid Earper shirt and blasted the centre out of a target with a rifle at the local shooting range on Friday night with my wife and her sister. Wynonna made me do it!  I wouldn’t have done that pre-Wynonna.

If you could make a custom metal piece for four characters, what would they be and why?

I would machine these custom metal pieces for the four 4 main characters:

  • Wynonna – Buntline replica gun
  • Waverly – Angel Wings
  • Nicole – Sheriff’s Badge
  • Doc – Playing cards and poker chips

Thanks so much for playing along, Patricia, and I’ll see the rest of you gentle readers back tomorrow for the last EarperView in the EH Con Canada series.

Today’s EarperView is with Fabi, the Secretary for the EH Con Canada Board of Directors.

Tell us a little bit about your non-Earper alter ego.

My name is Fabi and I live in Northern Canada; Whitehorse, Yukon. Love the outdoors, sports, TV, and traveling.

Thanks, Fabi, for playing along, and I’ll see you all back tomorrow for another EarperView!

#EarperView with @peakearp

For today’s EarperView, we have Michelle, Graphic and Web Designer for EH Con Canada.

Tell us a little bit about your non-Earper alter ego.

When I’m not Peak Earping-it-up, I’m Michelle – a freelance graphic designer in Vancouver, BC. Mine is a sweet little life filled with the emotional ups and downs of freelancing, the blissful privilege and community of playing in a bunch of queer sports leagues, and the soft and steady delight of being partner to my partner (her name is Nat – or Haught_Collar but more on that below).

How did you find Wynonna Earp and the fandom?

Like many individuals – closeted (like me at the time) or out and proud (like me now) – I found myself in a YouTube rabbit hole that took me to a certain Wayhaught meet-cute scene…my curiosity was piqued (I promise I’ll only make that pun once). I discovered this was from a show filming in and around my home province of Alberta, and after I gobbled up the aired episodes online, I tuned in live for the last few episodes of Season 1. I fired up a long-inactive personal Twitter account to discover that the cast and showrunner were super active online, and I’m not too proud to admit that having both Tim and Dom personally welcome me into the fandom (HOW CANADIAN) was a huge part of that initial pull to engage more online with the group of people I was learning had just recently christened themselves as “The Earpers”. My desire to play with some aspect of anonymity lead me to create the Peak Earp twitter account and… I was on my way!

I want to say that Bonnie (@WynonnaFans) impressed me again and again in those early months after the finale aired as we petitioned for a second season. She was the leader we all rallied around, and I have no doubt in my mind that the show would have quietly faded into the Canadian back-40 if not for her efforts to point us eager fans and our #nochill all in the right direction.

Is this your first fandom?

It is! I am surprised and delighted and maybe a little bemused to find that an online fandom has literally changed my life. How 21st century of me, I think. I still find it a little funny to tell new people the story of how Nat and I met (“well we both had these Twitter fan accounts for a Canadian sci-fi western TV show…. you know how it is”) but almost without exception I find that people find our story charming and a little magical. I certainly do.

What is your favourite fandom memory?

The day that Nicole’s blog “Road to Purgatory” was released and the fandom had to figure out the password was absolutely EPIC in my mind. Everyone was so good at not spoiling the fun, and you had to DM someone if you really couldn’t figure it out on your own. Once we had all consumed the content we then obsessed over what Waverly’s emoji sign-off “cat-eggplant-flower-plane” might signify.  I love that stuff.

What is your favourite con memory?

My only con was last year’s EH Con Canada (I find cons wildly overwhelming, which begs the question why I choose to be so involved with organizing one, lol, but Acts of Service is my love language, okay?). So in no particular order: watching that episode live with 500 Earpers AND the Wynonna Writers; our FOC panel; watching my pal Allie absolutely charm her way along as moderator of the Digital Howard panel; watching Nat run an auction seemingly effortlessly (has she done this before?) before the final cast panel.

What is your favourite Wynonna Earp/Earper activity?

Live tweeting. The thrill of all that new content competing with the mad rush to get the joke or hot-take out there first (always a futile endeavour), followed by the eventual resignation to simply enjoy the episode and read out the funniest tweets during the commercial breaks.

What has Wynonna Earp come to mean to you?

It is overwhelming when I think of it. My partner is because of this show. My closest pals in Vancouver are because of this show, and they brought Nat and I into so many queer communities within the city, so by extension almost my entire community is because of this show. I also tapped into some weird and wacky patriotism I never really knew I possessed because of this show (IT IS A 10 OUT OF 10 PRODUCTION DID YOU KNOW). What kind of magical TV show IS this?

Are there any pictures you’d like to share of your Wynonna Earp experience?

Before the Vancouver Earper group became what it is today (gloriously large) our little group was just myself, Nat, Rebecca, Franzi, and Sweet Baby Rae. This is my #VanEarpFam and I love them all. The second picture was when Nat and I first met Bonnie and I totally fangirled because I AM HUMAN and also see above re: highly respecting Bonnie’s efforts in this fandom.

VanEarpFam.jpg

VanEarpFam2.jpg

Sweet potato or Yukon Gold potato?

Yukon Gold, because this potato was developed in Guelph, Ontario, by a coupla canucks (seriously can someone explain my weird Canadian pride to me?).

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you Fandras?

If I were to proclaim this nationally I would say “Ten out of ten; dix sur dix.”

Describe why Fandras is a thing in 7 words or less.

She gives a damn. Isn’t that exceptional?

What is your favorite Earp sisters moment?

I mean, I am not known as the Kevin in my little Earper group or anything, so I humbly suggest the entire scene of Wynonna giving birth and Waverly with Peacemaker as my contribution to whoever is the current Webmaster of the-earp-sisters-are-very-important-to-me-dot-tumblr-dot-com.

How have you Earped your life?

My partner Nat and I met 3 years ago because we both had fan accounts on Twitter for this show, and even though we were 4000 km apart, we flirted so voraciously on Twitter via ridiculous things like #Rhymetime and mashing up Wynonna and Hamilton quotes/lyrics that Nat moved across the country after 6 months.

What’s the Earpiest thing you’ve ever done?

Being a part of the EH Con Canada planning team two years and counting! This is a whole other part-time job for much of the year, but I do it because I am so weirdly proud of this group of Canadian talent and want to celebrate them.

If you could change anything about Wynonna Earp to make it more Canadian, what would you change?

Monica. I love you for this question. Because even though IT IS A 10 OUT OF 10 PRODUCTION, even though the Alberta skies light up our screens scene after scene, even though the Canadian winter is this lurking, subtly present force both for the cast/crew and for the characters… I contend it could be more Canadian. Namely, I am sooooo irritated that they have made the creative decision to be vague about where Purgatory is. It is clearly in Alberta, JUST SAY IT ALREADY.

Thanks, Michelle, for playing along, and I’ll see you all tomorrow for another EarperView!

#EarperView with @Chaotic_Cold

Hello, friends, and welcome to a new series of EarperViews! This week we are going to meet some of the fine folks associated with EH Con Canada.

First up, we have CC, Head of Security and Medical for the con.

Tell us a little bit about your non-Earper alter ego.

I am a 52 year old mother of two grown men, one of whom recently got married. I am a registered nurse and one of three Certified Radiology Nurses in Canada. I am a Nurse Navigator in Radiology at a major hospital and am responsible for ensuring quality and seamless care for patients from Northern Alberta, Northern British Columbia, and a very large portion of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

How did you find Wynonna Earp and the fandom?

People on Twitter kept mentioning “WayHaught,” and so I fell into the YouTube rabbit hole starting with “all the Wayhuaght scenes from Season 1”. Then I saw that Emily promised to NOT kill off the lesbian character so I started watching the show. I was hooked. I started following more Earpers, and the rest is history.

Is this your first fandom?

I was “fandom adjacent” for Person of Interest and was devastated when Root was killed. This is my first foray into being a committed fangirl.

What is your favorite fandom memory?

When Emily, Kat, Varun and Greg came to the bar to hang out with Earpers after the Calgary Film Festival in 2018.

What is your favorite con memory?

EhCon was my first ever con, and I was part of the security team. It was amazing to see how nervous the writers, Dani, and Kate were before meeting the attendees and then how you would never guess based on their interactions. Also sharing the best falafel ever with my best friend while at EhCon.

What is your favorite Wynonna Earp/Earper activity?

I belong to a group chat for Earper parents. It has led to meeting some amazing friends. I am also inspired by Start the Wave and various charities supported by Earpers.

What has Wynonna Earp come to mean to you?

Inclusivity and love. At 51, I came out to my family and friends, and my Earpers have supported me through this journey.

Are there any pictures you’d like to share of your Wynonna Earp experience?

I gave an anti bullying lecture to college students, and Kate was gracious enough to let me use her #RockYourConverse and provide me with some pictures of her doing just that.

Kate and Cathy.jpg

Sweet potato or Yukon Gold potato?

Yukon Gold (although TBH red potatoes are better).

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you Fandras?

97.6

Describe why Fandras is a thing in 7 words or less.

Emily said I belong on the bus.

What is your favorite Earp sisters moment?

“I’m not saying it’s gonna to be okay; I’m just saying I’m here.”

How have you Earped your life?

I’m much more aware of times people aren’t included and try to take actions to fix that. I learn every day about being respectful. I keep moving towards being more friendly to the planet.

What’s the Earpiest thing you’ve ever done?

Flew 6800km on a whim because I thought I could make my loved one’s life a little brighter.

If season four saw the return of Kate Drummond, how would that storyline go?

Lucado’s twin sister comes to town looking to connect with people who cared for her sister. She loves the place so darn much that she stays and opens up a vegan cafe where people and dogs get to hang out together. She even provides the rescue dogs for you to pet. She gets invested in Jetri’s love life and becomes the Purgatory Pride Parade planner. She then runs against Bunny Loblaw for town council and wins! Then she starts promoting Purgatory as THE place for tourists wanting to meets demons, like a ghost tour in New Orleans, but with demons…

Thanks again, CC, for playing along, and I’ll see you all again tomorrow with another EarperView with one of the fine folks with EH Con Canada.
