#EarperView with @Iddstar

Hello, friends, and welcome to another EarperView! Today we are joined by the extremely talented, super-hilarious, and probably-very-nice-in-person (we have never met) Vic! You may know Vic from her IlluStitch collaborations with Megan or from her super-fucking-rad designs. I’m very partial to the potatoes of Purgatory, but all of them are delightful, really.

My favorite part about doing this series is how amazed I am time and time again with how talented our fandom is. I read Vic’s answers as I was getting ready one morning, and I was almost late for work. As I told her (and often tell many others), I am just some yahoo with a blog, but when people take this as seriously as I do, it means a lot. And Vic took this hella seriously. I am so honored to be in this fandom with such a talented, funny, intelligent human, and I hope we get to meet in person someday.

Tell us a little bit about your non-Earper alter ego.

Non-Earper Vic might be a creature of shadow and smoke, a mere blur in the night skyline of her local bustling metropolis, defending the innocent and foiling criminal injustice where she sees it. She might be a shapeshifter; a taker of many forms — the moving object you see out of the corner of your eye in an otherwise empty grocery store aisle at midnight. She might be a technological supergenius, concocting marvellous inventions beyond human comprehension in her underwater laboratory, opening wormholes and embarking on adventures through all of space and time. She might be a somewhat unremarkable humanoid who spends most of her days at a desk in a marketing office and most of her nights at a desk at home doing doodles for the interwebs.

Which is most likely is anybody’s guess, really.

How did you find Wynonna Earp and the fandom?

In my pre-Earp days I was a pretty solid fan of Supercorp Supergirl and a reasonable percentage of my day was spent on tumblr looking at [REDACTED]. In summer 2017 some… unfortunate behaviour from one of the Supergirl cast members caused a lot of…. ‘activity’ on tumblr. There were tears, there was bloodshed, there were vows of unmentionable acts of revenge. There were also kind, friendly folk who offered up an alternative show to get obsessed with. I hoppity-hopped on that bandwagon faster than you can blink. A few days later, after I think maybe my third or fourth consecutive round watching the show, I had an idea for a Waverly doodle I thought might be funny. I posted it to Twitter. Then my phone melted. And just like that, I was part of it.

Is this your first fandom?

Kind of yes, kind of no. Y’all ever heard of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld? Well, I don’t know if fandom is technically the right word for it. Civilised(ish) and moderately coordinated gathering of excessive approval from eccentric individuals, maybe. Either way, I’m a fan and DiscworldCon is the only other convention in which I felt surrounded by like-minded people in a way that I’ve experienced with the Earp fandom.

What is your favorite fandom memory?

Probably that one time a Twitter thread got a bit out of control and Kat Jetson demanded that it keep going for 5 days and get something like 1325 replies. I think in the end it had over 2000 replies and lasted 6 or so days, with a brief and random revival a few months later when we all discovered Twitter’s advanced search function.

What is your favorite con memory?

There are genuinely too many to be able to pick a specific one (and that’s just one convention). I have assembled some notable highlights:

  • Laying down on the grass outside the Tropicana hotel with @Ha_ha_nikki and forgetting for a minute that the rest of the world existed. And then she lost her sandal in a small hedge.
  • Convincing Americans that English people queue for an hour to get into the post office.
  • Watching @drunkhaught really try for all she was worth to rip a Canadian dollar (spoiler: she could not).
  • Realising people were walking around the convention with my artwork on their shirts.
  • Being introduced to Emily Andras as the person who drew her slipping on a banana skin.
  • Going for lunch with @Ha_ha_nikki, @katjetson and @ScaryKrystal and debating the pros and cons of glass ketchup bottles.
  • I had a really good salad.

What is your favorite Wynonna Earp/Earper activity?

Spending time with amazing Earpers. I’ve heard people use the phrase ‘find your tribe’ a lot in reference to this fandom and I think it’s spot on. I’ve found my tribe and so, of course, spending time with them is exactly the best. Spending time with one amazing Earper in particular is my all-time favourite.

Ahem. It’s @Ha_ha_nikki, for y’all that don’t know.

What has Wynonna Earp come to mean to you?

Home. Safe. Family. Love.

Wynonna Earp is love.

Are there any pictures you’d like to share of your Wynonna Earp experience?

I guess my place in the Wynonna Earp fandom is already all about sharing pictures. There are plenty of those already out there.

[ Editor’s note — I made her give me a picture, because I am drunk on power. ]

Sweet potato or Yukon Gold potato?

It’s gotta be Yukon Gold. They’re usually more uniformly shaped, which makes it much easier to stick paper Stetsons to them.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you Fandras?

On a scale of 1 to 10…Pretty Fandras.

Describe why Fandras is a thing in 7 words or less.

I don’t know, because we say so?

What is your favorite Earp sisters moment?

Season 1, episode 1 – when Waverly is dangling by her throat and Wynonna has grabbed her for support. Wynonna says “Deep breath baby-girl” and then SHE LETS GO. I assume that in that moment she knows what she’s doing is best and it’ll probably be fine and Waverly will just have to deal with the fact that this is what’s happening and she’ll get over it. To me that just sums up having a sister. Would she have let anyone but her sister strangle for a bit longer? Probably not. It’s protective and also down-to-business in the way that only family can be.

How have you Earped your life?

Honestly, my life now doesn’t even slightly resemble my life before Wynonna Earp. The show was a catalyst to some BIG life changes for me (*cough* ended an engagement, upturned my life, moved house and am now working hard to emigrate) and Wynonna Earp is now forever embedded into the core of what my life is about. I’ll never not be an Earper. Being an Earper will never not be the thing at the root of the life I’m now living, as well as being inherent in the day to day things I do and lovely people I speak to. From having an Earper family, to obsessively rewatching the show and thinking of new parts of it to doodle, to planning my year around flights and conventions, to wanting to give back and planning ways to celebrate this fandom (Earp Couch Con) and give it everything it deserves.

Oh, also the 50ft monument to Wynonna Earp that I’m commissioning for outside the front of my building.

What’s the Earpiest thing you’ve ever done?

There are some close-contenders for the top-slot of ‘Earpiest thing’. Despite years of saying I was scared of the idea of flying and having never really travelled anywhere significant alone before, I got a passport and got on a plane across the globe to a country I’d never been to, to see my Earper family, who I hadn’t actually ever met before. Apparently there was some sort of convention on as well. That seems pretty Earpy, but it’s probably still just a close second in the standings. Clearly, the Earpiest thing I’ve ever done is fall in love with an incredible Earper on the other side of an ocean, bonding over Wayhaught AU fanfic, and making the choice to move my life there to be with her. Because, no chill.

Editor’s note — it’s raining on my face. Weird. ]

Third place goes to doodling Earp characters as potatoes.

If the WE characters were inserted into “Once More with Feeling,” who would sing which songs and why?

Wynonna They Got The Mustard Out – Because it seems reasonably likely that Wynonna would spill mustard on herself at some point

DocRest in Peace – though I would add that I don’t think he’d believe it in his heart. I just feel like he’s entered a broody-Doc phase.

DollsI’ve Got a Theory – because if he’s not the one who already knows what’s what, he’s the one who gets the demon-diagnosis process going.

JeremyUnder Your Spell – though I can’t figure out if I think he’d be singing it to Doc specifically, or the entire Earptastic team.

BoboGoing through the Motions – because think about it.

WaverlyDawn’s ballet – because we all know the girl can dance.

NicoleThe Parking Ticket – because what a wonderful irony that would be.

RositaSomething to Sing About – because she soldiers on in this tragic demonic life she didn’t ask for, with nobody around her really noticing her struggles or cutting her a break. Ahem. Excluding the whole attempted baby-snatching thing. Not cool Rosita, not cool.

Vic, that was…seriously probably one of my favorite answers to the bonus question. Many thanks you to, and thanks to all of you for reading. I’ll see you back here someday soon, probably, for the next EarperView!
