Hello, all, and welcome to day two of the Earp Expo EarperView series! Today we meet Jasmine, the other Co-Director of Operations and Logistics.
Tell us a little bit about your non-Earper alter ego.
I’m an MBA student and Vendor Account Manager by day! Business is boring, generally, but I love what I do. It also comes in handy when planning a convention of this scale.
I live in SFL with my amazing wife and our two pet-children, Lola and Buns. I’ve been active in the LGBTQI community since I was 25 (I came out a little late in life). I also run the local chapter of my company’s PRIDE organization. When I’m not spending time with family/friends, working on my career or EXPO needs, I like to travel, I enjoy discovering new local restaurants with my wife (we are foodies!) or having (somewhat) lazy days at home every once in a while.
How did you find Wynonna Earp and the fandom?
I was reading an article about the “best couples on TV moments” on a website. One of the couples that made the list was WAYHAUGHT. I hadn’t heard much about the show at that point but who wouldn’t find themselves intrigued after that WayHaught couch scene? I decided to jump right in and start with S1E1. I had no idea what type of impact the show would have on me (or my soon to be newfound “framily”). My first interaction with the fandom was at DragonCon 2017. A few Earpers created a group chat for those attending, and I was invited to join via Twitter. Having the show and my Earper family is one of the best experiences of my life to-date.
Is this your first fandom?
I tried to get involved with the Callie/Arizona (Grey’s Anatomy) fandom, but I wasn’t really welcomed like Earpers welcome newcomers . The Grey’s folks are really intense. I guess the answer is yes, lol.
What is your favorite fandom memory?
When I travel to cons, I usually try and select the conventions where I know my closest Earper friends will also attend. We were together (with a few missing members) in Minneapolis for Earpapalooza, and we tend to get loud at random hours of the night. We needed to find a place where we could discuss everything Wynonna Earp, drink a little (or a lot), and maybe play some music. As we randomly walked the hotel looking for somewhere to plant ourselves, we stumbled across this huge open space before reaching the gym area of the hotel. We found a table, chairs, some ottomans….it was pretty perfect! We spent the rest of our con nights at that very spot, laughing and spending time with each other – it’s my best memory so far.
What is your favorite con memory?
It would have to be meeting the cast for the first time at DragonCon. Not only was it my first convention experience, but I was also preparing to meet the cast members of the show that I presently love! I was extremely nervous — a babbling idiot at times, I’m certain. I walked up to Dominique Provost-Chalkley’s table and I mumbled “Hello, nice to meet you”. She is one of the nicest folks you will ever meet at a convention. She said hello in return and took the print from my hand. I completely forgot I was supposed to hand her a post it with my name on it! Dominique sort of looked at me with her Sharpie in hand and slightly confused. I realized she had no freaking idea who I was, and I’m supposed to tell her what I wanted her to write/sign. I mumble (again), “Oh, I suppose I should give you this post it with my name on it huh?” She giggled and said “Oh, you suppose?”. By far my favorite con memory and it was a privilege to be mocked!
What is your favorite Wynonna Earp/Earper activity?
Attending the panels at conventions. The cast is always so genuine and interactive!
What has Wynonna Earp come to mean to you?
Wynonna Earp, for me, is an outlet to be yourself without caring what others may think of you. We have a show that addresses the complexities of relationships, both straight and queer. We have a show with badass female leads as a focal point. We have a show that isn’t afraid to address mental illness and combat the stigma of mental health. People and families aren’t perfect. Sometimes friends become family. I’m having trouble putting into words the love and light that Wynonna Earp provides to me and so many others. I just hope the cast, show runners and crew know how much we appreciate and applaud their efforts in creating the material we admire.
Are there any pictures you’d like to share of your Wynonna Earp experience?
Sweet potato or Yukon Gold potato?
Sweet potato!
On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you Fandras?
45?
Describe why Fandras is a thing in 7 words or less.
Jason Momoa told me so?
What is your favorite Earp sisters moment?
“I’m not saying it’s going to be OK. I’m just saying I’m here.”
How have you Earped your life?
I try to Earp it Forward whenever possible, especially through Expo. The best way I’ve Earped my life is by creating a dedicated fan convention with some of my favorite Earpers. This convention is for the fans.
What’s the Earpiest thing you’ve ever done?
It’s definitely creating a convention dedicated to Wynonna Earp and my fellow Earpers, with my closest Earper friends.
What real-life revenants do you wish that Wynonna and her crew could fight and defeat?
A certain president of a certain nation would be at the top of the list! The current leaders of the US Environmental Protection Agency are second. Lastly, anyone trying to erase our transgender brothers and sisters also must go.
Thank you so much, Jasmine, for playing along, and I’ll see everyone else here tomorrow for the next EarpExpo EarperView!
