Hello, and welcome back to another set of EarperViews! It’s great to be back, and I hope you enjoy the lovely people who’ve kindly agreed to participate.
I’m trying something different this go-round and attempting to do theme weeks. This week’s theme? Podcasters. And, no, it isn’t just me reposting mine, BP’s, and Michelle’s. I promise.
Kicking off this series, we have Kat Jetson. Kat first came into my radar with a truly lovely article for The Hollywood Reporter detailing how Wynonna Earp is paying homage to one of my favorite shows, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I’ve come to realize from Twitter that we have similar senses of humor and tastes in TV.
We both attended Dragon Con this year, and at the Earper meetup, I considered approaching her, but my nerves got the best of me. She wouldn’t know who the hell I was, and I’d probably just make a fool of myself rambling about character development. So instead, after she and Kevin launched Buffy Earpers, I reached out to them and asked if they’d kick off a new set of EarperViews. Luckily for me, they agreed.
If you haven’t listened to the Buffy Earpers podcast, I highly recommend it, even if it’s just for the theme song, which is top-shelf. But keep listening after that, because if you’re a fan of Buffy and WE, or even just genre TV in general, this will be your thing. Really, it’s everybody’s thing.
Tell us a little bit about your non-Earper alter ego.
It’s half boring/half pretty damn cool. The boring and responsible Kat Jetson has been an intellectual property paralegal for nearly 30 years! That’s crazy, right? But the attorneys are geek-infested, and the stability of that career has allowed me the good fortune to at one point own a tiny record label, book shows in Los Angeles, freelance write about the music and art and TV I love for the Hollywood Reporter, LA Weekly, a rad punk zine called Razorcake, and an all-lady drum magazine called Tom Tom. I don’t drink or smoke. I’ve never done a drug, I’ve never had coffee, and I’ve never had a Pop Tart. My dog looks like a lamb, and I love licorice.
How did you find Wynonna Earp and the fandom?
There is this woman that I follow on Twitter called Dorothy Snarker. She comments a lot on Lady Gay culture, and does it with heart and, well…sass. She wrote some thoughts/words about episode 2×02 and how consent was sexy. I was intrigued because quality LGBT representation is lacking. Also, a dear friend of mine, and fellow Earper @Nuutmeg was posting a lot about the show. She was clearly hooked and excited. It was a lovely mix of the two. I started watching at a particularly rough time in my life, and the heart of the story wasn’t lost on me. Taking in a couple of episodes a day came to feel like a hug or a comfort blanket.I wanted to write about it and its Buffy comparisons, so I went to Twitter and just kinda jumped right in. I usually head to podcasts when I’m interested in something, and found Tales of the Black Badge, and, well… that worked out delightfully, didn’t it?
Is this your first fandom?
I loved Buffy, but I loved it for the most part alone and in secret. I checked in over at Whedonverse for a little, but it felt like some secret society, which…weird. I also, ugh…long story, but I was kind of in the first wave of Twitter and engaged with a lot of L Word fans. The show was ridiculous and left so much to be desired, but there was a community online and they were pretty frickin’ no chill. I’ve also recently discovered the absolute delicious delight that is Carmilla, and I pride myself on being a Buffy Earper Creampuff.
What is your favorite fandom memory?
Hands down, it was the Wynonna Earp Spirit Day campaign that sprung from the bleeding hearts of Bridget, Bonnie, and Kevin. Earpers just kept coming through and donating and, gosh…we all raised awareness and TWELVE THOUSAND DOLLARS! Are you serious? I also got a kick out of everyone coming through for Melanie and crowning her the Girl on Top. No chill. I just didn’t really understand what that meant until those two happenings.
What is your favorite con memory?
I’ve only been to one that was fueled solely by my Earp love, and that was Dragon Con this past year. I got to reconnect with @nuutmeg, who I hadn’t seen in years, and I met and engaged with a ton of Earpers. God damn, they’re a welcoming bunch. I smiled for two days. Also, purely selfish favorite con memory is carrying around jars of pickles all day and getting Dominique to fake propose to Katherine with them.
What is your favorite Wynonna Earp/Earper activity?
I love live tweeting episodes with everyone. It’s, like, this all out BLITZ for an hour. Everyone is so exciting and engaging and…it’s a ride.
What has Wynonna Earp come to mean to you?
Acceptance. Love. Family. Fun. Kindness. CANADA! That aside, it’s such a well-crafted-show written and created by the best mama and papa ever!
Are there any pictures you’d like to share of your Wynonna Earp experience?
Pickles, perhaps.
Widow Beth or Widow Mercedes?
This is a cruel question. [editor’s note — I really feel like I can’t win! No matter my question, it’s an attack!] Both characters were such an unexpected delight. Every time they were on screen, I kind of cheered a little. But if I had Peacemaker to my head and had to choose one, I’m going with Mercedes. Mostly because she’s played by a woman that I love to lovingly refer to as “Dani Fucking Kind”.
On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you Fandras?
It’s a thing…that is immeasurable.
Describe why Fandras is a thing in 7 words or less.
Emily Andras saying “We can get gayer”.
What is your favorite Earp sisters moment?
They’re all uniquely and desperately funny and/or tug at your heartstrings, but there is nothing quite like the moment when Wynonna is giving BIRTH on a POOL TABLE and convincing Waverly that she is her sister in love and heart, and is most definitely the best of everyone.
How have you Earped your life?
I buy an incredible amount of fan art. Ha! And honestly, these people that I interact with on Twitter, they mean a lot to me. They’re friends, ya know? And I love our little community. It feels safe. And so over the top silly.
What’s the Earpiest thing you’ve ever done?
Likely this interview. [editor’s note — YEAH!!]
Nicole’s ex-girlfriend, Willow Rosenberg, shows up in Purgatory, looking for Gretta in order to perform a spell. What’s everyone’s take on Willow, and what is the outcome of the spell?
I’m sorry, but you lost me to the thought of seeing my two absolute favorite (redheaded) lesbians on screen together.
Jean-Ralphio, having faked his death and on the run from the law, gets trapped in the well with Bobo. How does Bobo react to this, and how long does it take him to kill Jean-Ralphio?
I’m pretty sure at the end of it all they would be writing horrible raps together, and Bobo’s new name would be Jello Shot. Jean-Ralphio is definitely wearing Bobo’s coat.
